Jeff Durbin’s half-hour “exposé” of the lies and deceptions of the pro-life industry, especially after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, was recently made available. In this film, he proves convincingly that the pro-life establishment actually opposes the abolition of abortion in the United States.
However, there is one part of Durbin’s arguments that we must criticize. It has to do with the historical comparisons he uses of slavery and 1930s Germany. Durbin, like many in the pro-life establishment he rightly attacks, says that abortion is morally equivalent to slavery and National Socialism, because it denies the humanity of certain people. This really shows Durbin to be quite ignorant of history and Scripture, which may detract from the film’s probative force, considering that it is made from a decidedly Christian perspective.
However, the message of this film has been shown to be undeniably true in the time since its release. For on November 28 the Catholic News Agency ran an article titled “Some pro-life lawmakers urge new approach amid electoral results.” In this article it reports on the pro-life establishment’s betrayal of its supporters, quoting several “pro-life” politicians and leaders as saying: “We need to listen to women. . . . too many are stuck in the policies and arguments of the past.” “Stop talking about any kind of regulation at the federal level and [instead] leave it to see what states do.” “There is a middle ground and I think we should seek the middle ground.” “We’re not for complete bans on abortion.” Furthermore, Samuel Lee, a “longtime pro-life lobbyist,” recently reaffirmed this, saying, “Any bills to authorize murder charges against women who undergo abortions are dead on arrival. I’ve killed lots of bills in my 40 years as a pro-life lobbyist and I guarantee they’ll be LOTS of pro-life lawmakers in both chambers who’ll kill these,” and, “There is nothing pro-life whatsoever about legislation that would allow the death penalty for a woman who undergoes an abortion or any other person who performs an abortion on her.”
