As was expected, Denmark has now introduced further so-called “hate speech laws” in order to appease the Turks. For the Associated Press reports that a law which makes it a criminal offence “to inappropriately treat, publicly or with the intention of dissemination in a wider circle, a writing with significant religious significance for a religious community or an object that appears as such,” punishable by “fines or up to two years in prison,” was passed by parliament on December 7th. That this law will ever be made to apply to Christian writings, no one is stupid enough to believe. For Christianity has no influence on any part of the Danish government, but the threats of the Turks and Iranians are treated with the utmost respect.
However, one wonders where the concern of the Foreign Minister that restrictions against burning the Koran should only apply “in very special situations” has gone. Perhaps, which seems likely, that assurance was merely a lie to pacify the government’s opponents. For, despite bringing delightful and reasonable attacks upon the government’s decision from both the left and the right, showing it to be barbaric and absurd, the opposition was ultimately unable to prevent the passing of the law, which is expected to be signed by Queen Margrethe later this month.
Now all that remains is to see if Sweden takes the indefensible but understandable step of following Denmark in opposing religious freedom. Considering all that is available to us, this seems quite likely.
